Fifteen minutes ago, William left his apartment for some food. Now he’s returned.

The intruder is tall. Will feels alarmed. He hurries back downstairs, opens his garage, and gets into his car to retrieve the pepper spray he keeps in his glove compartment. The loud snoring of the tent guy next door goes completely unnoticed as he retrieves his self-defense weapon. He returns to his front door, slowly and carefully unlocking it. He opens it as quietly as possible and is immediately barraged with a thick cedar and pine oil stench. He coughs quietly once before quickly covering his nose. His eyes begin to water, and his skin feels the heavy weight of what he can only guess is the air itself.

He stands there, staring at the pot for what feels like half an hour, until his phone rings.

He lifts his drooping head and brings his gaze magnetically to the cleavage of a large breasted woman featured in the police story on the news. The male officer was speaking to the female news anchor while a redacted head shot was placed on the screen to the right of them. All William could focus on were the bulging breasts launching out of the pink top of the stalker the officer was warning the public about. His imagination took over and fantasized about them heaving up and down accompanied with the same heavy breathing he experienced at work earlier in the day. Immediately his own obelisk made him shift his body significantly because the constriction of his pants started to hurt him.

The fridge is across from the stove. He opens it, revealing an almost barren interior except for two items:

William grabs CannaBracula and places it on his old yellow Formica counter top next to the stove. He opens the cabinet above, and pushes to the side his Weight Mate meal replacement powder and pulls down from the top shelf an old 1980s Transformers lunch pail with Optimus Prime on the lid. Opening it, he found various small, colored medical cannabis containers. Some of which are: Sour Diesel, Blue Dream, Mother’s Finest, Jack Herer, Durban Poison, and Strawberry Cough Sativas. Also present, are containers labeled Skywalker OG, White Widow, Blueberry, Purple Rain, Master, Northern Lights, God’s Gift and Banana Indicas. Additionally, there is one red mini BIC lighter and a small, black, charcoal-filtered device called a Smoke Buddy.

“Sorry, ma’am, I didn’t mean to mess up your books. I’ll put them back.”

Inside, the bookstore’s walls and ceiling were laced with intricate patterns that resembled the roots of an ancient, enchanted tree. Soft amber light filtered through hidden lamps, casting shadows that seemed to shift and dance on their own. The air carried the scent of old paper, warm cedarwood, and something sweeter, a hint of pipe tobacco, as though the ghosts of authors past still lingered between the shelves. From somewhere deep within, a faint phonograph tune played: scratchy jazz that ebbed and flowed like a memory, mingling with the soft rustle of unseen pages turning themselves.

After passing a few shops, the red-bricked walkway veered right and ended at three steps leading to a solid green wooden door.

The building’s exterior blended earthy tones of green, brown, and silver. Artificial molding shaped like twisting tree roots ran down the sides, with the center resembling a massive tree trunk. Perched at the top was a small tree house adorned with carved wooden owls, squirrels, birds, cats, and turtles. Hanging just above the entrance door, beneath the tree house, was a sign that read: Magic Door.
