As he slides on his headset, the phone’s light blinks at him. His finger is just about to press the answer button when the Dragon Lady appears at his cubicle, her expression as unforgiving as ever.
“OK, Butler, you’re getting a write-up for this one.”
“Why? What did I do wrong?” he asked, raising his hands in confusion.
“You disappeared. There was a barrage of calls, and poor Jack got overwhelmed with them.”
“What?… But he said you wanted me to leaf blow the server room!”
“You already did that earlier today, William. You should be ashamed of yourself for blaming poor Jack like that. Look, I know you vanished because you hate your job, but if you don’t want to work here, you can always work for Amazon.”
Then she leaves his cubicle, and the tension in his shoulders finally gives way. He lowers his head onto the desk, eyes closed, savoring a fleeting moment of quiet.
Work Sucks!
He wondered: Could it get any worse than this? Is this really all my life will ever be about? Maybe there’s a better life I could be living. Please, let this not be the purpose of it all.
Lifting his head, he sees it’s time to go. The phone’s light flashes insistently, but he lets it blink. With a few clicks he begins the long agonizing process of shutting down his Microsoft Windows 13 workstation. What felt like an eternity later, after it froze and almost blue screened, then rebooted, it finally powers down properly after an inconvenient last minute update. He clocks out, and heads for home without a backward glance.
