Inside, the bookstore’s walls and ceiling were laced with intricate patterns that resembled the roots of an ancient, enchanted tree. Soft amber light filtered through hidden lamps, casting shadows that seemed to shift and dance on their own. The air carried the scent of old paper, warm cedarwood, and something sweeter, a hint of pipe tobacco, as though the ghosts of authors past still lingered between the shelves. From somewhere deep within, a faint phonograph tune played: scratchy jazz that ebbed and flowed like a memory, mingling with the soft rustle of unseen pages turning themselves.
After passing a few shops, the red-bricked walkway veered right and ended at three steps leading to a solid green wooden door.
The building’s exterior blended earthy tones of green, brown, and silver. Artificial molding shaped like twisting tree roots ran down the sides, with the center resembling a massive tree trunk. Perched at the top was a small tree house adorned with carved wooden owls,squirrels, birds, cats, and turtles. Hanging just above the entrance door, beneath the tree house, was a sign that read: Magic Door.
He returns to his desk, tucks away his glasses, and pulls off the mask.
