Her eyes twinkle as she smiles. “Can I help you find something special today?”

“Not really. I’ll just look around a bit.”

As William strolls through the store, his eyes catch on books filled with magic, wizards, mythical beasts, long-lost secrets, and strange new worlds he yearns to explore.

“I recommend the Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel Scripture. The owner said she mysteriously received a copy one quiet Sunday morning just as she opened the store. It’s about a magic pencil that can create doorways into other worlds. It can summon gods, fairies, gnomes, and other magical beings and even weave powerful spells.”

Her recommendation hit the mark, stirring a curiosity he couldn’t ignore. Heart ticking a little faster, he snatched the book off the shelf, the cover cool and smooth beneath his fingertips, and made a beeline for the counter. As he set it down, the faint scent of coffee and old paper swirled between them. That’s when he caught her name on the tag pinned just above a delicate silver pendant: Chu Mei.

I’d love to, his distracted mind thinks, as his lusty body betrays him, allowing little Willie to stand tall and hard in a parade that the front of his pants shamelessly advertises.

“Oh, I almost forgot to mention,” Chu Mei noted, “we have a special promotion today. One free cup of coffee with any Sci-Fi/Fantasy purchase. Would you like one?”

“Sure,” William replied, gleefully smiling from this pleasantly surprising turn of events. While trying to hide his shame, a comforting warmth came over his being that helped him totally forget about his earlier mishap with the cookie mafia.

“If you have a moment, you can rest over there while I make you one,” she said while motioning to a small wooden table in a quiet jazzy corner of the store he hadn’t noticed before.

William walks over and sits down. He closes his eyes and enjoys the fresh smell of the k-cup brewing. He recognizes the flavor as Verona by its smoky, charred cedar woodiness riding atop the tidal wave of luscious dark cocoa. When he opens his eyes, he notices there’s another room in the store.

Was that always there?
